Hi,

It is possible to run other OS’s on an i-Series/AS400. A version of Linux is available which will run on the AS400. It’s not possible to run OS/400 on another hardware platform because the operating system is specifically written for the i-Series/AS400 hardware.

Regards,

Martin Gilbert.

Why would you want to run another OS on the system. the OS/400 has a built in AIX environment called PASE. This requires loading for free 5722SS1 Option 33 Portable Applications Solutions Environment which lets you run native UNIX applications over the top of the AS/400 OS without having to load another OS. If you want to run LINUX then you must be on a machine that allows LPARs so it must be models 8xx and above hardware. There is an option is System Service Tools (SST) to work with patitions and you can create a Guest Parition to load LINUX on but it must be Redhat or Suse Linux that is supported on the AS/400. Let the Operating System do the work for you to be able to run thousands of Apps. OS/400 comes with JAVA development and Run time features and you can download and install PHP to run on the AS/400 - iSeries - System i or IBM i as it is called today. You have all the operating system you will ever need with everything fully integrated and tested. If you want to load the full AIX operating system on this machine then the newer hardware will support running AIX on the same hardware in a diffeent LPAR. Hope this helps you to see how full featured and modern the iSeries OS is. Lovemyi
