Creating a AS/400 database

Hi, Till now I have worked as a Developer & recently I got a task on creating a database on AS/400. Can any one please let me know, what are the steps to be taken before I start creating database on AS/400 server.Is there any kind of tools so that I can connect with my server & to create Databases,tables,views, schema etc.

There are many ways and many tools come with the AS/400 (aka iSeries). It is best if you use those tools which are proprietary (iSeries Navigator, SEU, PDM, DDL, STRSQL command, etc.). 


However, if you’ve never seen an iSeries and you don’t have time to become familiar with it, take heart, it works just like all other databases when using SQL and ODBC/OLEDB.  
  1. Get a user ID with sufficient authority from the system’s admin.
  2. Install Client Access with the ODBC connector on your PC 
  3. Write SQL scripts to create your tables.
  4. Execute SQL scripts through an ODBC/OLEDB connection

    Is this going to be a native I-series database in a library or are you looking to create a database in the IFS for other access ? The tools mentioned above are a good place to start.
