AS/400 CPYTOPCD

I am using CPYTOPCD in AS/400 cl to copy an invoice spool file to a PC document. I then email the document to myself (as a test). My goal is to be able to email invoices, instead of printing them. I am using format PC data as *text. When I open my emailed document, the spaces have been randomly removed and also the line spaces. I think I need to convert to html or to a PDF. Is there a way to do this using an AS/400 command, or must I purchase some software. If so, what are some software options? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Some months ago we had a similar problem and found that the best way was to convert it to PDF.
At first we created a small utility ourselves, but that left out the empty lines.
That we found a utility called ‘CoolSpools Plus’ by <a href=”http://www.ariadnesoftware.co.uk”> Ariadne Software </a> ( <a href=”curbstone.com/_spool_pdf.htm”> Curbstone </a> in the U.S.). It converts database and spoolfiles and optionally send these either by e-mail or FTP.
Nice utility at an attractive price and with good support.
(I have no interest in his company, other than being a satisfied customer)

Try http://www.cutepdf.com/Products/CutePDF/writer.asp (or just www.CutePDF.com – It’s free.

With the download you set up a printer on your pc, which isn’t in fact a printer but creates a pdf wherever you point it when prompted. On the AS400, you need to set up a printer session which points to this ‘printer’ and change your spool to go to it. Then release the spool (’6′) and, if it goes to *MSGW status, enter a ’7′ and ‘i’ to ignore, after which you’ll be prompted for where to place the pdf – it always remembers where you stored the last one you did, handy if always using the same location on your pc/network.

It is good, hope this helps.

When I open my emailed document, the spaces have been randomly removed and also the line spaces. It's highly unlikely that any spaces are "randomly" removed. Nor is it likely that any "line spaces" are removed. For the former, please show any example of what you mean. Show an area of a spooled file in a green-screen view and the same area when viewed from within an e-mail attachment. There is almost certainly an explanation available. For the latter, there usually are no "line spaces" in a spooled file in the first place. Therefore, there is nothing to remove. What you perceive as "line spaces" are most likely the result of printer control characters that direct the printer to skip an extra line. When you run CPYTOPCD, you are skipping the steps that would convert the printer control characters into physical blank lines in the text document. If you process the control characters, your "line spaces" will show up. BTW, CPYTOPCD should not be used for this. It only works in the /QDLS file system which should be avoided. Use CPYTOSTMF or CPYTOIMPF or write programming to do it yourself, and direct the output to a streamfile somewhere in the /root file system rather than /QDLS. Tom

If you run V6R1 or higher you may add two prameters to your OVRPRTF cl and the invoice will be 'printed' to a .pdf file automatically. The parameters are
    TOSTMF('/......./xxxxxxxxxxx.pdf')
    and
    WSCST(*PDF)

Otherwise, you'll probably just get an error message telling you that the required product isn't installed. Tom

Tom is right. 5761-TS1 has to be installed. Also 5761-SS1, Option 03 and 33 has to be installed. The good thing is that this is no cost products, which are delivered on the CD's that comes with v6r1. For further reference see:

We have used Gumbo Software's SpoolMail product for many years. Works great and reasonably priced. One thing we really like is that everything runs natively on the System i. Something else we really like is that we can use this product to both convert a spool file to PDF and deliver it via e-mail in a single command. Very cool. I am not associated with this company. Just a very satisfied customer.
