The cache battery is located on the RAID controller card that supports your disks. I do not know which RAID card you have but some are changeable concurrently while others need the entire system shut down to remove the RAID card from the card enclosure to be able to replace the cach battery.

Even if the caceh battery is replaceable concurrently, I would still recommend a clean shut down of the system to change it. That way any data is written to the disks while shutting down to make sure the cache is cleared.

IBM's instructions are excellent if you follow them to the letter.

You can see the concurrent battery door on the end of the raid card if it is concurrent but be warned that the battery when they get old tend to swell so you could easily have problems taking the battery out of the door if you try to do it concurrently.

Strongly recommend calling IBM to do this. Our battery needed to be replaced early this year. I asked the IBM tech about horror stories we hear of people losing all their data when the battery is replaced. He said this is possible if the correct procedure is not followed. I was surprised how many steps he went through.

There is a lot more to this than replacing the battery in a watch or cell phone!
