I am in search of information for barcoding onthe AS/400. We would prefer not to purchase new printers. Can printing barcodes be done without using a graphical interface software package?

Answer Wiki:
Hi, There are various software packages around for barcode printing directly from the AS/400. Maybe these will work with your existing printers, but you'll need to talk to the software suppliers to be sure. Regards, Martin Gilbert. From PGMBOB. With the correct IBM package tou can create an AFPDS (Advanced Function Printing) print file using a DDS defined printfile with the barcode keyword. Check the requirements for this keyword in the DDS manual. You have complete control without worrying how another package will interface your work. Mos laser printers and copiers should be able to produce bar-coded documents from this AFPDS file Good Luck PGMBOB

If you have an IPDS printer, you can use the BARCODE keyword in a print file.

If you are using bar code printers, such as the Intermec printers, it came be done in a RPG program with a little coding help. If that is the case let me know and I can send you some sample coding.

We have good success with TL Ashford software, who specialized in bar coding software for the AS/400. We drive a variety of Datamax and similar bar code printers. This software can really take a lot of the tedium out of bar code creation.

You do not have to buy a new printer. We manufacturer hardware that will allow you AS/400 to print to any PCL5 printer. Email me at carlos.lara@typehaus.com
