Depending on where you work there may not be a lot of difference between the two. I view operations as the daily monitoring and maintenance of the system and administration as having a wider scope (and greater responsibility). It never hurts anyone to have at least a basic knowledge of and familiarity with operations.

Didinu, it sounds like you’re familiar with the general structure of the system.

Get familiar with Navigator as it’s a useful tool. Follow this site – it’s a good place to see what others are doing (very helpful if you’re working solo). Check out MC/Press Online (http://www.mcpressonline.com/). Get used to reading IBM documents, especially Red Books.

I’m just listing resources and approaches off the top of my head. I expect the others here will have other suggestions.

Hi Spalt, Just started my career as a AS400 admin and I know only pretty basics like definitions of the work management, monitoring jobqueus, performance,problems…
I am not good in any of the above and want to learn things in detail. Suggest me the path to folllow.

Just how familiar are you with the AS/400 / iSeries / System i? Your current knowledge of the system is going to determine what areas you need focus on.

I would suggest starting with system configuration and system security.Lots of good info on the web.

there is so much to learn to be as400 system administrator. so which topic comes 1st or what etc its quite hard to say
