AS/400 is a midrange server. The operating system used is called OS/400. It uses commands to interact with the server and the user.

What kind of technology AS400 is?   An AS/400 is obsolete technology. They haven't been built for years.   AS/400s were superseded by iSeries systems, then by System i. In 2008, the current generation, IBM Power Systems, was started.   When built, AS/400s were midrange computer systems running the OS/400 operating system. I'm not at all sure what you mean y "kind of technology". What would you say the "kind of technology" is for a PC running Windows? Tom

But almost everyone still calls the current systems, and the preceding systems, "AS/400s". IBM hasn't managed to make the name go away. -- Tom

AS400 was the hardware - and OS400 the operating system. The system mainly used green screen consoles to configure / use / operate (this is not the case now). For those that used them they were a work horse of a server than could do allot without it complaining. Also the old boxes could withstand some punishment. I have heard of a flooded server room drained and the AS400 dried out and it powerup without any real issues.

AS400 was the hardware – and OS400 the operating system. Not quite. An "AS/400" was both hardware AND software. OS/400 was just a software part of "AS/400". Without OS/400, the system wasn't an AS/400. When iSeries LPARs arrived in 1999 and ran other OSes, they were no longer "AS/400s". Earlier AS/400 LPARs only ran OS/400. -- Tom

The older Application System/400 is hardware and software bundled into one nifty package with a robust and tightly integrated database. Now it goes by "IBM i" even though folks still call it an AS/400 or simply a 400-John Andersen
