My gut feeling is that virtualization is part of your current IT org. From a management perspective, virtual servers are no different than other servers.

From the admin perspective, I would want clearly demarc'ed groups for virtual servers and hardware machines, just so I could instantly know what I'm looking at, but those servers are still my servers, no matter how many I have per CPU..

For us a mid size company it falls under IT. I think it needs to get a lot bigger before we would consider moving it too a separate group.

All businesses need is yet another group to place a technology in. Many organizations have trouble separating information security from IT even though there’s an obvious need. With virtualization there’s no obvious need that I can think of so where’s the incentive?

Good point Kevin. I agree unless there is an ROI metric on moving it into another group it will never happen especially when most companies are running lean IT departments already.
