Michael has replied to you but I am sure that you are still looking for more details. My reply will be specific to your location as I am also an AS400 developer from past 9 years in India.

In India, there is no value for technology - the first important point to remember. Reason is - every year, so many freshers keep coming in IT.
You may get a job on any technology in your early career but as you grow old by experience (salary starts increasing) and after 7 years - you might be earning 8-10 lacs p.a. while you might started at just 3 lacs p.a.
    Here is the issue.
Once you cross 6-7 years of exp. on any technology, Indian IT companies start looking for junior staff and then they expect you NOT to do technical work. They want you to become managers but not everyone can do management as population of india is high, there will always be someone else willing to kick you out.
Especially on AS400 - the issue is - no new development work is coming, all are maintenance/support projects so companies do not need much experienced people on this technology.
Getting a job on AS400 is relatively easy compared to JAVA, for example as all freshers are learning JAVA. But, jobs on as400 are very less too. Companies still need 10 years exp. people with java skill as architect because new development work is still there in java which is not the case with as400.
Coming back to project management - these days, companies need project managers from the same technical background which project is running on. So, as400 is not the right choice for PM too.
Getting a job on as400 is easy but only until you are less than 5 years of exp.

enough abt as400 prospects in india, lest go abroad now and see-
Outside India - there you can work on any technology as a programmer as long as you wish. In UK/US, people with 20 years of exp. also are programmers but not in India.

I believe - you can survive on SAP for long time in India.

DO NOT DO AS400 in INDIA, its a waste of time here.
