 Are you worried about IT job security?

With new, amorphous offerings such as the cloud and SAAS, are you worried at all about your position or department being outsourced? It seems IT is always under construction; is it a matter of certain positions becoming obsolete or is IT simply being rearranged and retitled?

I think its just redefining some of those IT jobs being done inhouse and out sourcing them probably to meet business objectives - its still same old wine in a new bottle.

But my fear is that IT professional in employment will take the bashing once they have little less challenging jobs to do and the C-executives will see them more as a unnecessary cost centers.

Am I communicating?

IT job profile keep changing and it adapts to changes. As long there are innovations there will be jobs. We just have to be opened minded to the changing definitions of our jobs. There wont be the traditional jobs that were available years ago. Anyone who is willing to learn, adopt, move forward, will have jobs.

It really depends on the industry. I work in the healthcare industry and it really is more cost effective for us to produce and maintain our IT ourselves. More and more healthcare software is being deployed as hospitals and staff become more technologically dependent and savvy. Doctors submit prescriptions by computer instead of illegible scripts. Nurses are able to verify and cross-check them by the same software. I take care of backups of data from the servers these applications use and we have a growing IT department as more techonology is deployed, so it is a good and safe place for a job in IT here anyway. I imagine many other industries are cutting back and finding solutions in the cloud or outsourcing to save costs and those solutions are becoming more viable for many. So far it just makes more sense technologically and financially for us to continue to run the show ourselves as much as possible. We have many talented software programmers and admins who know our customer base and needs inside and out which helps us develop our own solutions more effectively than outside sources.
