They support 1000′s of servers and 100′s of storage arrays. Their needs are not typical for most customers. That said, historically, Dell has deployed a lot of FC fabric, which includes a lot of storage product from our partner, EMC. Also, Dell IT is very active in evaluating new technologies- i.e., they are currently conducting proof of concepts with Dell EqualLogic products around Exchange and virtualization solutions.

And, likely, iSCSI will meet your needs for a long time. Many customers discover that for a lot of their applications, performance over iSCSI is often close to FC. Obviously, your mileage may vary, depending on the mix of transactional vs sequential IO, the number of drives being accessed, number of applications and hosts, etc.

A small business running accounting applications, email, and other transactional applications will likely find iSCSI is just as fast as FC, as the workloads are not huge and the performance bottlenecks are in the drives – not the pipe.

Given that, as you plan your next steps, you may find that iSCSI vs FC is not the most important decision to be made- rather you will be focusing on how your storage solutions support your business: how do I need to store, protect, and retain my data. Once you figure that out :) , your choice of iSCSI or FC will fairly straight forward.

I have heard good things about fibre as well.
