Are you surprised by the switch from second to third platform technologies?
During IDC's Directions conference this week, much of the discussion focused on IT's 'third platform', which includes mobility, big data, cloud computing and social media. In fact, IDC reported that third-platform revenue is projected to grow at 12% each year for the next seven years  while second-platform spending (PCs and Ethernet connectivity) will only grow by 1%. Are you surprised by the switch from second to third platform technologies?

It's funny, I've never even heard of "third platform". I'm not surprised by the numbers though. These technologies are all the rage. I suspect the reasoning behind PC and Ethernet stagnation is that many businesses already have that infrastructure in place and, perhaps, they're not spending additional money on new technologies. But who really knows? Hey at least we can count on the analysts and product vendors to continually create new fluff terms and keep people like me on our toes.

Interesting question, I too haven’t heard of the “3rd” platform. With the cost reductions in Capital Expenses offered by cloud platforms, I think it’s not surprising that less and less is being spent. We know too that more and more low cost tablets are being purchased as well. As we move away from do it yourself networks to hosted online platforms run by people around the work in other countries… I can’t help expect that the trend will continue.
