During IDC's Directions conference this week, much of the discussion focused on IT's 'third platform', which includes mobility, big data, cloud computing and social media. In fact, IDC reported that
third-platform revenue is projected to grow at 12% each year for the next seven years while second-platform spending (PCs and Ethernet connectivity) will only grow by 1%. Are you surprised by the switch from second to third platform technologies?

Interesting question, I too haven’t heard of the “3rd” platform. With the cost reductions in Capital Expenses offered by cloud platforms, I think it’s not surprising that less and less is being spent. We know too that more and more low cost tablets are being purchased as well. As we move away from do it yourself networks to hosted online platforms run by people around the work in other countries… I can’t help expect that the trend will continue.
