I have a 170 with 4 and 8GB drives and want to change to 17 GB or 36 GB drives. Is it true that the IBM drives have IBM's os/400 micro code and I can only use their drives? I know that the 36GB are working because they are being sold that way (but no larger than that). Thanks

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The model 170 can support the 17GB drives, but I’m not aware of anyone selling 170s with 36GB drives. I’d be interested in examining any sales info from anyone who has them for sale. I haven’t looked exhaustively, so it’s possible that someone worked out a combination of parts that worked.

Some have had success with using AS/400 drives in other systems. It requires a low-level formatting that recreates sectors at 512 bytes rather than the 528 bytes used for the DASD structures for AS/400s. I can’t recall explicit mention of anyone going in the opposite direction.
