I am the IT Director at my church but have a limited amount of experience with software. My back ground is Hardware, Networking, video, audio and other. One of my commitees came to me a couple of weeks ago and is asking me for help. The project is to take the Church's past history, since 1905, document, pictures, video's, etc and scan them into a system that will record the information and can be retireived easily. The first thing that came to my mind was Cataolg software like a library would use. We also have a library that we would love to be able to setup online for outr members as well so they can look at what is available and check it out. Can anyone tell me if there is a solution out there that would help to do this? i thought that HP and Microsoft both had something that could do this but when i went to serch i could find nothing. Any help is appreciated! Thanks -ITSQUIRE

Hi ITSQUIRE,

I can point you in a direction to investigate that would be a Microsoft solution. Check out SharePoint Server, http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/default.mspx and specifically the Content Management features. http://www.microsoft.com/sharepoint/capabilities/ecm/features.mspx

From what you describe, it sounds like that would accommodate your wide range of media formats.

There is a possibility of using Small Business Server’s SharePoint Portal, but based on your description I think you will want more than what SBS is meant to provide.

For your more technical and deployment specific quesetions, I would point you to the TechNet portal for SharePoint. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/sharepointserver/default.aspx It’s free and has forums and whitepapers which can provide more details.

Hope that helps,

Gwen
