After earning a CCNA, which certification is best for job security?

I am currently getting my CCNA and would like to do one of the Cisco professional courses after. Which one would you recommend in terms of job security and money? I have been told CCVP is a good option, but I am not sure.

The CCNP is a safe choice. You can go for a CCVP if you want to work with QoS and VOIP phone systems, but that is a more specialized field.

Get some training / certifications in non-vendor specific areas. For example, with your CCNA, you should be able to sit & pass the Network+ exam with a little preparation. Then, consider other non-vendor certs from CompTIA like Security+ or the ISACA CISA or ISC2 CISSP.

I agree with MShen that the more mainstream Cisco professional certs (CCNP and CCDP) probably make the most sense for those looking for direction from elsewhere. Only those who already know they’re strongly interested in other specialties–VoIP, Security, or ISP/Carrier topics for CCVP, CCSP, and CCIP respectively–should take these other paths instead.

I recommend working on yourself - improving your communication skills, setting goals, taking a course in time management, etc. - and getting hands-on experience. This stuff will take you waaay farther in your career and contribute more to job security and money than any cert/degree/etc. ever will. I’m not saying certs are bad. Just don’t rely on them for money and job security.
