Learn UNIX inside and out. Shell and C+ or C++ are helpful, as well.
CISCO and other companies that make networking equipment use UNIX plus their proprietary commands to access and work with their equipment. I have worked on minicomputers, PCs, servers, routers, load balancers, etc. They all used UNIX with additional proprietary commands, so I never worried about being certified in every kind of hardware. I simply used their manuals for the commands that were available in their equipment.
Get a job in a Data Center. Any job in the Data Center will give you access to experience with a variety of equipment. Learn everything you can about the equipment and the network in that Data Center. Ask questions. Read every manual you can find. Once you know everything about doing daily maintenance make sure you learn something new from studying outages. Start a reference manual with information about all the outages you work and equipment you install. You will learn more from working outages and installing/deinstalling equipment that you will from daily maintence.

Depends on how you define network engineer. Most of the time that means a background in Cisco. The Cisco programs are best. The problem is that most Cisco jobs require a great deal of experience even with certifications.

If you have six months of experience, you need to be working to get two more. Then a certification and 3 more years before your resume will be seen as competent. There's a lot of misunderstanding about how quickly one can rise in the field.

Look for a technology you think will take off or take ITIL type classes to learn managment skills for IT. In the long run though you need to pay your dues, volunteer to be on cutting edge projects, find a mentor etc.
