    The PDF file type is very commonly used to share documents. It is better than sharing a Word document for example because not everyone uses Word. In my opinion, Word is to big and slow to use as a reader anyway. PDF also keeps the file contents intact by providing read-only access. It is easy to create a PDF with freeware such as CutePDF.
