The company I work for is a mixed environment of AS400, AIX, and Windows 2000 systems. Recently we have finally started to look seriously at utilizing the Windows AD to store pertinent information about our users and computers. The question I have is what is the easiest way to make this information available for modification and viewing to our helpdesk personnel. Can the mmc be modified to show these custom and existing hidden AD attributes? If so where can I find information on how this is done? Or would the best approach be a web based app for poking at the AD?

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I would strongly suggest looking at creating custom MMC templates that you can then deploy to the helpdesk personnel. The framework is already in place and eliminates the development time required in building a web front-end to AD. It can certainly be done, I’ve done it myself at the company I used to work at, but the MMC framework is the route I would take initially. Check out the following URLs for more information.

You could also use the .NET framework. Just use System.DirectoryServices, it has all that you need to work with AD. For examples on how to do it, just go to msdn and search "System.DirectoryServices". Hope that helps!
