Q:
Access rights for Storage Team members
We are having to justify the access rights that our storage team members have to the Windows, VMWare, and Unix servers. Our storage team is also responsible for all backups, restores, and disaster recovery. Can any one provide a best practices or a already compiled list of access rights that they have identified a storage engineer needs to successfully execute their duties?

The Domain Backup Operators Groups is already available in AD. A member of the domain backup operators group can backup and restore files to any computer on the domain. They also have the ability to login locally to domain servers.

To restore Exchange data, they would also need to be Full Exchange Administrators. But if you use a backup application like Backup Exec, you would only need a delegated account with Full Exchange administrative priviledges to restore to exchange.
