 4096 file limit on xp

Is there a registry fix or other options to increase this limit? Thanks in advance for the help

Windows XP it self doesn't have a limit on the number of files per folder. It depends on the file system that you are using. The max files and folders per folder are: FAT16 - 512 FAT32 - 65,534 NTFS - 4,294,967,295 If you use long file names for the files and folders (over 8 characters for the file name and 3 for the extension) then the number of files and folders available per folder will be reduced on the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems. If you need to put more files and folders in a single folder you'll need to convert the drive to NTFS.

Ya, that might be the official math or office line from Uncle Bill but let me tell you, I have a pretty hefty machine but every time I get more than 50,000-60,000 files in a single directory thing start to go so slow it’s not funny. I had one directory up to 195,450 files and just to view the directory with explorer took about 4-5 minutes. Than moving around in the directory cause a refresh that took almost al long. I notice a real change in performance about about the 40K files mark. I try not to let a single directory go above 20K files.

IT took al morning jsut to get it to split the 195+K files into 10K files per folder. My performance came back to normal after I did it though.

BTW: I’m talking about Win XP Pro SP3 HDDs are NTFS.
