VMware Converter (I think it's called vConvert or something now) is free is you have vCenter (was Virtual Center).

Platespin is an excellent product but it requires a license for each machine you convert.

Platespin will allow you to migrate with almost no downtime. VMware Converter requires a few minutes of downtime to use.

vConverter (VMware), Platespin, and Acronis. In my environment we use both vConverter as well as Acronis. We love both tools. Acronis can p2v and v2p IF NEEDED.

VMware has two versions of the VM Converter - a free version and an enterprise version which you get if you have Virtual Center. The free version will do what you want. Just download it read the short user doc and go. http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/

PlateSpin is a good utility, in that it allows you to automate and monitor migrations but like any technology, issues can and most likely will arise. This is not a shortcoming of the technology itself, but Murphy’s Law is alive and well in these kinds of scenarios. I would perform due diligence in the planning stages to maximize the opportunity for successful migrations. Based on the stated requirement of only 50 conversions, I would probably test VMware vCenter Converter first and see if it will fit the bill, as it is free and a product of VMware. If that doens’t work, or if there is a compelling reason, I’d then look at PlateSpin.
