It depends where in the network you are talking about. From the switch to the desktop, then probably not. From the core switches to the border switches, probably. On the internet backbone between the east coast and the west coast, absolutely.

I see a need for increased speed for any part of the network, though I agree with Mrdenny that the core to border and coast to coast is where there is the more need. With the growing use of VOIP as well as video conferencing and other high dependable bandwidth applications <i>on top of the data traffic that is already present</i>, I don't believe we will achieve "fast enough" status any time soon.

As technology like VDI and cloud computing continues to evolve, I believe there will be an increased need for bandwidth to the desktop, but I dont think we will need 10gbps in the next five years. I am on the same page with above for everything from LEC and beyond.
