Dear TX IT Ninja:
You've got a terrifica background to start from.. I'd urge you to get the Cisco CCNA Security cert, and then to go onto CCNP Security, and also the ISC-squared's CISSP. You should be able to parlay that into a senior security position either in the public or private sectors. I'd also urge you to join and become active in the Austin chapter of the ISSA (Information Systems Security Association) because the local group is very active, has a large membership, and will be a great way for you to find the perfect government or private sector job you seek.

HTH, and thanks for posting so cogently and comprehensively. Makes my job much, much easier.

Dear TxITNinja:

I will comment on your posting on Wednesday afternoon or evening. I'm frantically preparing for an out-of-town trip tomorrow (all day) and Wednesday morning. The quick, top-of-my-head response is to tell you to look for a network admin/IT position at a mid-size company where you can work with interesting systems and issues and learn about deployment, network and systems management, and virtualization technologies. Plenty of opportunities with the State of TX or UT if you don't mind a lower grade of pay.

1) Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Computer Info Systems, Master of Science with a concentration in Management Info Systems
2) I have a solid six years of experience in desktop support
3)Central Texas
4)Technical Track
5)Security, Microsoft Certs (Enterprise Desktop Support and Servers)
Currently hold: A+ (2004), Network+ (2006), CCNA (2007), CWTS (2006)
Working on: CCNA Security
6)Possibly...
7)Desktop and basic network support (switch configs, port-security, etc.)
Don't know what job I really want...I like the network side of things, but I also like enterprise desktop support (more the deployment side of things, upper level stuff (image deployment, app deployment, server administration-though I'm a little weak in this category)...I'm sick of the little things...installing printers or reimaging PCs because of spyware! =) )
Job satisfaction and salary, I prefer job satisfaction...but wouldn't mind having a balance
If I can have any job...working for the feds (great pay, secure job)...maybe it would be second-hand to help desk lead or second-hand to senior network admin...don't like dealing with politics. I like the private sector pay, but not the job security...
