In a lot of these cases, these are people that have no real storage experience. So what do they do? They usually find a few guides and don’t follow best practices and end up implementing in a default type of scenario. One of the things I see people forget to do is LUN masking. This is the act of apply access lists essentially to servers and storage, determining what can access what.

When provisioning storage, make sure you mask the LUNs that you don’t need certain servers to see. If you don’t mask the LUN, you can easily overwrite data that you don’t realize you needed. This way if the LUNs are masked the servers that need to see it can see it and the servers that don’t need to see it don’t. It only takes a few minutes to do but it can be a life saver!
