Hi folks! So back to MDM! I mentioned that if you are forced into using mobile devices in the work place and you can’t wait, there are technologies out there right now that can help.

One of those is Citrix as i mentioned. But what can you use to track and wipe devices that are not BlackBerries managed under BES? Well for you managed services folks out there, Kaseya has a great solution. Kaseya now has a Mobile Device Management module you can purchase from them.

This allows you to not only remotely wipe devices, but also geo-locate the devices. Not a bad idea. This is accomplished through the installation of an agent on the mobile device which is downloaded through the various mobile device app stores available.

You can read more here.

These days many people are starting to use iPads in the enterprise and are wondering how they can do this without allowing users to have full access to iTunes. There is a really easy way to achieve this!

Implement parental controls! This is built right into iTunes and you can lock down the iTunes store and other portions of iTunes so a user is restricted on what they can do and what they can view.

You can read the instructions from Apple here.

With HP waving the white flag, who is going to challenge Apple’s dominance in the tablet space? Here’s hoping somebody buys PSG from HP and keeps the tablet alive. As I’ve always said, competition is a good thing and a lack of choice can only hurt the consumer in the end.

I really like the offerings from the Android platform, but are they going to be left to fight the battle with iPad alone?

What is this might you ask? It is Google’s answer to the tablet OS. Honeycomb promises to have a great feature set. In this day and age with the iPad here, everyone and their dog wants to have a tablet in their arsenal. I think Google will be a great contender and it should be nice to see what they have to offer.

Hi folks! So with the release of the iPad, users everywhere are trying to find new and inventive ways to use it in the workplace. The biggest question is the security surrounding it.

Well if one embraces a more non-traditional way of using a tablet device, you can have your cake and eat it too. The iPad is fully compatible with the Citrix Receiver which allows you to securely connect to a Citrix environment.

By setting up your applications this way you can use the iPad securely and not worry about losing any confidential data if the iPad is lost since all the data is on the server side, not the iPad.

Hi folks! So here is a question I have had a lot of people ask me. Should I buy an iPad or MacBook Air they ask? The first thing that goes through my head when this question is asked, is that they don’t really compare.

The reason for this is one is a tablet and one is a laptop and both have very different uses. I think the MacBook Air can be used from a day to day office productivity standpoint, or even for a home user or student, but the iPad is more of a geek gadget that can be used for very specific things.

Don’t get me wrong, I can do a lot of things I can normally do on my laptop on an iPad, but would I actually WANT to? Not likely. The iPad can be too kludgy for things like that.

So what’s my answer to the question? Get both! They are great devices in their own rights and server two different purposes, although their might be some overlap in between.

Apparently Apple has given us limited capability where that is concerned. I guess they’re thinking if you just stick an Apple logo on something and put the letter “i” in front of it people will buy it. I guess they’re right.

But in all seriousness there is an easy way to share files on the iPad. You can use the app I mentioned in my previous post called Dropbox. Dropbox is free for use up to 2 GB of space, and it works on the iPad!

Hi folks, this just in, Cisco is going to make a tablet like the iPad!!!

What the heck is up with that? I expect they are using it to leverage some of their other offerings like webex for example. The word on the street is that it’s going to run on Android. This is going to be an interesting competitor for Apple for sure.

It will be good that a company like Cisco with the backing that it has will enter this arena of competition. It should at least foster some great advances in tablet computing.

What is this device called? They’re calling it the Cius. You can read more about it here.

Hi folks, so hot off the presses, I got a chance to use an iPad! My buddy bought one and I thought i’d give it a quick try.

For those of you that have been hiding under a rock, the iPad is Apple’s answer to the tablet, and is essentially a big iPhone (IMHO). What would it be good for?

Well for any app where you need to take quick notes in a meeting, or want to use it as a collaboration device in a meeting where you could easily pass it around for example. I tried using it and I found it kind of kludgy to use to be honest. I can see it’s value for reading ebooks though.

In any case I wasn’t blown away by it but I will concede it’s a very neat tool and has the geek factor going for it.

-Cheers, RP
