Online services under DDoS Attack!

So unless you have been asleep all this time, you would have seen the latest in the news from the online community. It seems there has been a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service Attack) launched against Twitter, Facebook, and Google’s Blogger.

This attack has been hitting so hard that the online services are still dealing with it. Twitter even had to disable some features in it’s platform in order to survive against the attack. These attackers are taking advantage of chinks in their online armor and are really giving them grief.

Rumour has it that these attacks are a direct result of people trying to quiet a blogger from Georgia. By taking out these social networks they’re hoping he won’t be able to spread his message. In my opinion, this is not the way to be doing this. Resorting to illegal attacks on these social networks to affect one person is absolutely ridiculous! Time to batten down the hatches and ratchet up the security! I hope the authorities find the people behind this soon!

You can read more about it here.

Bell Canada and Google at each other’s throats regarding Net Neutrality

Bell Canada as you may know is currently in a heated battle with consumers regarding Internet throttling. This obviously has Net Neutrality proponents up in arms. Bell is insisting on still throttling it’s customers Internet use such as with Bit Torrent but consumers are demanding that this practice be stopped.

Recently the CRTC deemed that Bell wasn’t breaking any laws and is allowing Bell to continue this practice. Google has sent a message to Bell regarding this, to quote Google ”From consumer, competition and innovation perspectives, throttling applications that consumers choose is inconsistent with a content and application-neutral internet, and a violation of Canadian telecommunications law, which forbids unfair discrimination and undue or unreasonable preferences and requires that regulation be technologically and competitively neutral.”

Bell didn’t like what Google had to say and said this “The commission should see these claims for what they really are: the use of policy rhetoric devoid of substance in order to promote vested business interests. Indeed, the opposite of these claims is clearly the case; necessity is the mother of invention.”.

This made me laugh. Bell of all people saying that “the use of policy rhetoric devoid of substance in order to promote vested business interests”. It’s like the pot calling the kettle black. Yeesh.

New Web Browser Google Chrome Released

Hi folks, Google has just recently released their new web browser called Google Chrome. I recently had a chance to try it and I have to say it’s a great first effort on Google’s part.

Don’t get me wrong, I still prefer Firefox personally but anytime another browser comes out on the market to challenge the dominance of Internet Explorer, that’s a good thing! It will be interesting to see where Google takes it from here.

I think one of the things that makes Firefox so great is the large availability of third party themes and add-ons, it makes for a very powerful web browsing experience. If Google Chrome can embrace this it would make for a great Firefox alternative.  Also Google Chrome seems to be quite quick at rendering web pages as compared to the competition. That can only bode well for Google.
