Who’s going to acquire RIM?

Posted by: Raj Perumal
acquisition, Microsoft, RIM, Samsung

Hi folks! So based on the latest information from RIM’s last quarter and news of Jim Balsillie resigning – people are talking about what’s next for RIM.

One of the biggest rumours floating around is the acquisition of RIM or some of it’s patents. That by far is what keeps RIM in the game today still. Things like BES, BlackBerry instant messenger, BlackBerry’s upcoming Mobile Fusion to manage all platforms, and the famous BlackBerry Push and BlackBerry keyboard.

Who could benefit this in my mind? I’m thinking either Microsoft or Samsung, or maybe even a combination of both. If those companies joined forces and bought up RIM or at the very least licensed RIM’s patents, they could make some killer phones. Phones that could really stand a chance against the iPhone and Android onslaught.

Time will tell if this happens, let’s see how this plays out. You can read more here.

The Speed of Change

Hi folks, so in the last post I spoke about taking the proper certifications to stay relevant. After all you don’t want to be taking certs that are worthless to employers.

In this one I wanted to talk about the speed of change in IT as it relates to certifications. You see IT is constantly changing and you want to make sure you are taking certs that are not out of date the moment you take them.

You can do this by focusing on companies that stay with the times instead of doing certs with organizations that let their material go out of date.

There are many companies that stay up to date and with the times, and one of those companies is Microsoft. As a Microsoft Certified Trainer I can definitely vouch for their education programs with first hand information. Microsoft does an amazing job keeping their curriculum up to date, especially considering how many products they actually have.

If you’re going to get certified, taking the Microsoft path will definitely help you keep up with the speed of change.

Microsoft Certification and Staying Relevant

Hi folks, so as you know I’m a big proponent of certification. I always advocate keeping up to date and making sure you’re taking the right certifications.

Don’t just go out and take any old cert, but make sure you’re investigating and researching what is the hot ticket in the industry today, and make sure the certs you are taking are relevant to what employers want.

For example in this day and age, the cloud is a big deal. In light of this Microsoft is now offering a Private Cloud Certification track. This is a great way to get ahead of the competition and stay relevant with your certs.

Today is the last day for BES upgrade

Hi folks, so as you may have heard , today was the last day to upgrade BES to the latest version and be eligible for the free PlayBook.

I’m not sure how many people took advantage of this offer but I’d love to see the numbers. RIM’s recent quarterly results indicate that things haven’t been going well, and i hope they have more good deals like this in the next quarter to help spur on new business.

The biggest thing will be attracting young mobile phone buyers who are flocking to the iPhone and Android platforms. RIM has to find a way to become relevant again. Here’s hoping they figure this out, as I want to see this company stick around to provide competition to Apple and Android.

Only time will tell if this was a good move. Stay tuned.

Do you have enough power for your wireless?

Hi folks! So you have deployed that new 802.11n wireless solution but things just aren’t quite working the way you want to. What’s going on?

Well all solutions aren’t created equal, there are many APs out there that might not give you full 3×3 MIMO functionality . Even if you do have an AP that supports 3×3 MIMO, you might not have enough power to drive the AP.

How do you do this? Well with POE+ switching you can deliver enough power to an AP so it runs in 3×3 MIMO mode. You might also have to get a power adapter for the AP so it can run in 3×3. Another way you can accomplish this is by buying a POE+ injector. Whichever way you do it, make sure you plan properly.

Having said that, there are a lot of installations where 3×3 MIMO is not even required and 2×2 MIMO is just fine. Do a proper analysis of your environment and ensure you deploy your wireless solution based on your needs, because if one thing is for certain in the wireless world, one size definitely does not fit all!
