One of the best VMware “aware” backup applications has just released its newest public beta.

B&R v7 now supports Veeam Explorer for SharePoint and now supports Veeam Explorer for Exchange 2013.

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft SharePoint. This is the brand new tool for item-level restores from Microsoft SharePoint 2010 and 2013. Support for SharePoint 2013 is somewhat limited in this beta (restores to original location are not implemented yet), so SharePoint 2010 would make it the best test subject for now. We even provide a sample SharePoint 2010 database as a part of this beta to speed up the evaluation, but really you can point the tool to any SharePoint database at all (including ones backed up by 3rd party solutions).

Capabilities include (all without the use of agents):

Browsing SharePoint databases within compressed, deduplicated image-level backups of SharePoint virtual machines (VMs) without having to restore the entire database

Searching for specific SharePoint items with rich search capability for e-discovery purposes

Recovering and exporting items directly to the original SharePoint server, or sending items as email attachments to specific users

Support for SharePoint running on both Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware vSphere.

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Exchange 2013. This is the new version of the existing tool – and as the beta name implies, the big new feature is support for Microsoft Exchange 2013 (in addition to Exchange 2010). Another new feature is reworked logic of restoring Exchange items to the original location, which should make this process more robust.

Browse Veeam Explorer provides an Explorer-like interface that you can use to browse Exchange mailbox stores inside Veeam backups. A familiar, easy-to-use interface—and immediate visibility into your Exchange backups—mean you can quickly locate the mailboxes or items you need.

Search Veeam Explorer provides basic and advanced search capabilities so you can find precisely the items you need. Search across one or several mailboxes or mailbox stores using a familiar Outlook-like “Find” interface.

Export Once you find the items you need, simply right-click to:

Export to a PST file

Export to MSG files

Send as attachments

export an entire mailbox to a PST file.

No agents Veeam Explorer for Exchange requires no agents—either for backups or for restores. So unlike other tools, there are no agents for you to license, deploy, manage or maintain.

I have personally used Veeam’s Universal Application Instant Recovery (U-AIR) many times in the past and I can tell you, it’s the best in the business.

I have been using Veeam for quite some time, and it still is a very solid product, it will have some competition with VMware Backup, but I am sure VMware can’t do all that Veeam is able to do. I like the fact that you can restore single mailbox items from an Exchange Backup with no sandbox, also Veeam now supports direct access to SAN (I think only for HP Lefthand SAN right now, but I could be wrong. Here are some of the details!

Veeam® Backup & Replication™ 6.5 represents the next wave of Veeam innovation, and delivers even more groundbreaking capabilities, including:

If you are running Veeam in your environment it would be in your best interest to keep it up to date.

Here is the latest update.

Release notes

KB ID : 1442

These are the issues resolved by the Patch 3 for Veeam Backup version 6.0.0.153. All patches are cumulative so each below fix is contained in this patch.

Issue 1
Application-aware processing fails for SQL server where Veeam configuration database is located.

Issue 2
Cannot specify “0″ in re-IP rule.

Issue 3
Hot add operation can sometimes cause a very long backup source/target proxy Virtual Machine stun. This stun can be so long that it can cause all jobs using this backup proxy to fail due to timeout with:
“Error: Client error: A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time“.

Issue 4
CBT fails on virtual disks other than Hard Disk 1 with the “Soap fault. A specified parameter was not correct” error when the hot add processing mode is used.

Issue 5
Backup console UI freezes periodically (upon automatic refresh event) when there is a large number of managed objects exist

Eric Siebert, vExpert, wrote a series of pdf documents that explain how backups work in the VMware Environment, including an intro to VMware, backup and recovery methodology, data recovery in virtual environments, as well as a brand new document about choosing the right backup solution.

Here is an insert from the latest guide, “Choosing the right backup solution for a VMware environment”.

Virtualization is an invisible layer that is inserted between physical server hardware and operating systems. When you implement virtualization in your data center, it affects almost everything in your data center that surrounds or connects to your virtual environment. This includes any type of hardware & software, such as storage, networking, monitoring and of course backup & recovery. With virtualization you’re in a whole new world especially when it comes to your critical backups. These backups are your safety net for anything that happens in your data center, and you need make sure that you choose a backup solution that is made for that new world as well.

Go here to download and read all the articles.

The Number 1 Backup Solution for VMware now supports Hyper-V! I personally think this was a step in the right direction for Veeam, but honestly should have happened earlier…

Veeam Backup & Replication provides fast (ESG: VMware Recovery 77x Faster!) , flexible and reliable recovery of virtualized applications and data. It unifies backup and replication in a single solution, increases the value of backup and reinvents data protection for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V virtual environments.

Veeam Backup & Replicationis built specifically for virtual environments to provide fast backup and recovery for virtual machines running on both VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V. With a single license, from a unified console, you can support your entire virtual infrastructure with industry leading features such as instant file level recovery and streamlined VM recovery, scalability, 2-in-1 backup & replication, built-in de-duplication, centralized management and much more.

So who all has installed Veeam Backup and Replication 6? I haven’t done so yet, but I will be sandboxing it soon. For a list of new features, download the PDF.

Well i figured out a workaround, basically what is happening is that licensing is bound to the backup job, so to reset this you have to get creative. Lets start with creating a new VM, it can be a plain VM with no disk allocated to it. Now create a new job in Veeam Backup and Replication 5.01, choose that “shell” of a VM and run the backup. This will add the ESX host that the VM is being run by to the licensed servers. After the job has been completed, Veeam will recognize all hosts and you will then be able to resume your backups successfully. Please leave a post or comment if this helped!
