Updating BlackBerry Devices via BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Here’s a warning for all you BlackBerry junkies out there. The scenario goes like this. My father bought a BlackBerry 8320 SmartPhone, i being the wonderful son I am, wanted to update his OS software. So I plugged the phone into my computer, BlackBerry Desktop Manager 5 saw the phone and said there was updated software available, so i trusted BlackBerry Desktop Manager to update the phone. What ended up happening is far from what I expected or wanted, the phone got backed up, thankfully, and wiped, when it went to upload the new OS, it said that there was non available. Rebooting the phone it ended up giving me the 507 error. I figured it was a total loss and I would have to make up some wacky story to get the phone RMA’d. What I ended up doing was scouring the Internet for answers and I found it, here. This website tells you how to restore a nuked or wiped blackberry and it definitely saved my butt. Another little bit of knowledge, it took the BlackBerry 8320 15 minutes on its first boot, so dont go thinking its the “Hour-glass of death” like some people like to call it. If after 20-25 minutes it still won’t boot you should reload it again, if all else fails, then there is no hope other than bringing it back to the manufacturer.

So the moral of the story, use the BlackBerry Desktop Manager that came with your phone, do not use any other one, if you do you might end up spending the night reloading a BlackBerry like I did.

Blackberry Curve 8900 Duplicate Emails

In the last few days I was getting duplicate emails on my phone, not every email mind you, and there was no pattern, it just seemed like sometimes I would get an email twice. I have an account on Blackberry Enterprise Server from work. Well I used my past experience with Service Books to resolve my issue.

Go to Options > Advanced Options > Service Book

Highlight Desktop Sync, press the Blackberry Button then delete

Wait 2 minutes and press the Blackberry Button again, and select Undelete

You should no longer receive duplicate emails!

Blackberry Storm 2 (ODIN)

Well it was bound to happen, a leaked video made its way onto the Internet. If you currently use the Blackberry Storm, or any Blackberry for that matter check out this video. The person in the video states that even with the old OS, the phone performs faster and is much more responsive. Check out the video and article here.

Blackberry Curve 8900 Smartphone

Well, I said I was going to be one of the guys that bought a Palm Pre, but fate stepped in and dealt me a Blackberry Curve 8900 Smartphone, and what a beauty she is, with its crisp and clear screen(480×360), to its speedy WI-FI connection, and its awesome camera (3.2 MP), I am very happy man. I have had the phone for less than a month, but its truly is an amazing phone. I had unplugged it from the charger yesterday am at about 3am(don’t ask me why I was up at 3am on a Saturday night and not out!) and haven’t plugged it in yet and its 10:15pm on Monday evening. WI-FI and Bluetooth were also on the whole time. One of the things I did was turn the brightness down on the Curve 8900 from100% to 20%, you barely notice a difference yet, apparently it nets you 25+% battery life… if you interested in reading about the full specs check it out here.

Another thing to mention is “BlackBerry App World” if you haven’t installed it yet, you should do so now… check it out here.

The Curve 8900 is a GSM(non 3G) phone, for you CDMA(EVDO) people, there is a new smartphone that has already shown up in Canada, its called the BlackBerry Tour, check it out here. Judging from the specs it seems that it is 3G capable, so I am guessing that there will be a GSM “3G” version that we could just swap out our SIM cards and start using the new “Tour” also.

Citrix Receiver for iPhone

Here’s an inserp from eWeek on the new Citrix Receiver for iPhone.

“The Citrix Receiver for iPhone uses the Citrix XenApp infrastructure to neatly deliver Windows applications to the small screen. Users of Apple’s iPhone can tap the freely available Citrix tool to access data in the field and do some document editing. Although I found that the app is most useful when the iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, it is possible to use it through the 3G cellular connection. If the AT&T Edge network is your primary connection, the Citrix Receiver likely won’t be a satisfactory option for accessing enterprise applications in the field. “

I myself don’t have or will have an iPhone, but a couple guys at work do, and I was quick to point out this little bit of information to them. I wonder if they will release this for windows mobile or BlackBerry in the near future?!

BlackBerry Calendar Sync Issues

Here is a quick fix that I use from time to time when my calendar stops syncing on my BlackBerry Curve 8830 to BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server).

1.) Go to Options

2.) Advanced Options

3.) Service Book

4.) Desktop [CICAL]; now once you have this highlighted, hit the “BlackBerry Button” 7 (black or white dots) then click Delete, wait about 3 minutes, then, hit the BlackBerry button again, and select undelete. This should force a resync with you calendar service books. At least this way you won’t have to wipe your blackberry!
