SAP Prospects and Roadmap

With the new technology coming into the market and SAP not developing anything inhouse how is the future looking for budding SAP consultants. Is this still a good career option?
I recently read an article where it was mentioned that SAP now buys third party applications. I am sure this must not be a bad move as they are trying to retain the competitive edge by buying the new technologies and merging this with SAP thus creating more synergy for customers.
Is plunging into SAP a wise move as this was the case from beginning of 2000?
