    Great career advice!

For goal setting, you may want to check out http://www.GoalsOnTrack.com/, a very nicely built web app designed for tracking goals, habits, and todo lists, and supports time tracking too. It's clear, focused, easy to navigate, and most of all, really works!

Another recommendation that goes well with this is to practice the "rule of three", which is to make sure that every macro goal and every micro goal can be broken down into three steps. If there's more than three steps to accomplish a particular item, that's a good indication you need to separate out some steps. The benefit is that it helps to make everything concrete. People often do not succeed at their goals not because they are not positive or worthwhile, they typically fail because their goals are vague or amorphous.

J.D. Meier talks about this in his book "Getting Results the agile Way", and would definitely be a good resource for ideas :).
