If you are not already a member of the SQL Skills Insiders, you need to be. Go sign up now. You are missing out on some good stuff and you should not be missing it. It is free and you get a cool sticker. I am a member and I look forward to the email every month. So please take advantage of the kindness of the group at SQLSkills.com and sign up.

Also in the last newsletter, that I just received, talks about a contest that is running and is sponsered by SQLSentry.com. They have some great tools and you should check them out. But they have a great free tool called Plan Explorer that I use for sure. If nothing else, check that out since it is free.

But on to the contest….

Click here for the details and please notice the value of this. I have been to the IE1 class and if I had not or if it was for IE2 I would be participating for sure. Paul and Kim to a FANTASTIC job teaching and I learned a ton in that short week. They will make your brain hurt and they will make you a better DBA for sure. So go win this contest and have a great week of training.

Go sign up to attend and submit a session to present as well. It will be a good time and a good way to meet new DBA’s and do some networking and perhaps make some new job contacts. Hope to see you at the event.

SQL Saturday is now complete and in my mind it was a success. I was not able to attend the full event so I can not do a full review of the day but I can speak to the parts that I was able to attend. It was not much but it was fun.

I flew in to Orange County at 11:20AM and got a cab to take me to the event. The cab dropped me off outside of the campus on the side of the swap meet and that was crazy. It was very busy but fun to check it out as I was walking to the event. Once I got to the Campus I had a hard time finding the right building but that was not the fault of the organizers. That is just me and I get lost. I had a map with the location marked and just had a hard time finding it. Once I found it, I found that I arrived just in time for Lunch. I signed in got my badge and grabbed my lunch. It was a good lunch and I was not disappointing. Since I was speaking I did not have to pay for the lunch but I would have. After I ate I found the room that I was presenting in as I was presenting right after lunch. I went in, about an hour early, and got my stuff set up and started to just walk through the presentation one last time. Never did get very nervous this time and I am sure that is because I have done this presentation before.

As people strolled in I made sure to hand everyone a Powershell Sticker and a Business card. The business card that I handed out was for a drawing of sorts at the end for some PowerShell Plus Licenses. After all had come in and settled I had 27 in my session and all seemed to be interested in what I was talking about and that is always nice. I am looking forward to getting the feedback forms so I can see what people really thought.

After my session I attended one more session on Vitualization, this was done by Microsoft so it was Hyper-V Centric but not a sales pitch and I appreciated that. The content was great and it was a good session. Unfortunately that is all I was able to do and attend at the event but I did find out that just over 200 people showed up and I would say it was a great and successful event. Also all the food that was left over from lunch was donated to a local shelter for abused women and I really liked that. Just another great way the SQL Server Community gives back.

I would like to thank all that were involved in the event planning as they did a great job and from what I was able to see, everything ran very smooth. I would also like to thank all the sponsors because without you these events would not be possible. Also all the attendees for coming out and making the event a success. I hope that you all got something out of the event and especially my session if you attended.

SQL Saturday #73 looks like it is shaping up to be another great event. I only wish I could be there all day. I will be arriving in the morning, presenting, and then leaving. I am hoping to be able to see a couple other sessions but am getting excited about presenting again. it is the same Powershell for the DBA that i did in Phoenix but I think it went well so I thought I would try it again. I am working on getting another Powershell Plus License or two to hand out like i did in Phoenix so I hope to have that for you if you attend.

Also, if you are going then why not speak. It really is a lot of fun and once you do it you will want to do it again. Just be sure that you practice. I practiced so much that I did not even need my slides and i could have talked about everything that I wanted. So give it a shot. Here is a link to the Event so you can register and submit a session.

Hope to see you there….

I just checked out the SQL Saturday Phoenix Homepage and I was very impressed by the number of submitted sessions that are on the board and we have a couple of sessions that have been suggested as well. If you head over to the schedule page you will be able to see the sessions that have been submitted and the ones that have been suggested. Notice that nothing has been accepted or turned down at this time. That is because the call for speakers is still open. I am impressed with the sessions that have been submitted thus far and I am hoping to see some more great ones as well. I think that both of the suggested beginner topics are great as well. I would love to see someone in our communitity step up and do sessions on Backups and one on some basic Troubleshooting of Failed jobs. Both have been suggested at a beginner level and I think it would be awsome for someone to step up do a session on these topics. Both are good topics and I am sure will be very helpful to many of the beginners in our community. Lets get more sessions submitted and try to make this event great, if we can do good for our first one then just imagine how great we can make the next one.

Please come out and learn and or teach. I hope to be doing both. You do not need to be an expert at everything or really anything. If you have good knowledge in an area come out and teach the rest of us. We all want to learn more and I bet you have something to teach us all.

Hey all, Phoenix is getting closer to SQL Saturday. The event is going to be held on July 17th at the DeVry Univeristy Campus located at:

DeVRY University
2149 West Dunlap Ave.
Phoenix, AZ 85021

We have some great sessions that have been submitted and it should be a great day of free training, networking, and carreer building. I have a session submitted about Powershell and how it will help the Production DBA. I am pretty sure that I will be presenting so I have been doing some of my own legwork to get some great giveaways during my session. I should have the following for sure.

Powershell Cheat Sheet Poster – Donated by the Midnight DBA’s (blog | Twitter ) – Great stuff on this site.

Powershell Stickers – Donated by /n Software http://www.powershellinside.com

A few Licensed Copies of Powershell Plus – Donated by Idera http://www.idera.com/Content/Home.aspx

I can not thank all of these people and companies enough for the generous donations to the event and my session specifically. Also need to thank the current event sponsers:

Quest – http://www.quest.com/

Fusion-io – http://www.fusionio.com/

and of course PASS – http://sqlpass.org/

I also know that Microsoft has provided some swag for the event and I am sure that will be good. I think that the organizers are working on getting lunch provided for the event and who knows what else.

Please, if this sounds interesting to you, pass the word around and get to the website to register. Link provided Below.

http://www.sqlsaturday.com/register.aspx

The more people that show up at the event the more fun it will be and hopefully we can have more and more of these that get better and better. We need you, the Community, to show up and get involved if you can. We are just over a month away and all the help we can get the better.
