We have installed a number of Cold Aisle Containment systems and find they work very well. 15% plus power saving at Yahoo data center in the UK.
We use plastic sheeting above the aisle. The panels are supported on unique device that lets the panel drop into the aisle at 136 degrees well below the temperature that starts the sprinkler. Gas is not a problem, the panel would either drop or lift up. Full containment is much more benificall than stopping holes in floors ( this should also be done). Pay back 4 months. We have had the comment that fire detection is improved by less dilution of the smoke particals.Power saving £35000 plus in a 300 rack room, 2 redundant CRACs, raised inlet temps, even cool air, less hardware failures etc. It can only get better!
Idea to fit in life centers and lagacy.

I would be interested to hear more detail about the $563,000 savings on the energy bill. The CRAH's that I'm accustomed to would cost well below $10,000 per year (assuming ~$0.07/kw-hr). Seven CRAH's would be less than $70K.

Very interesting. Wonder what material was used for containment above the racks, and how you deal with fire suppression at that point? If your covering the aisle I guess you'd have to have a gaseous system?
