Raise your hand if you’ve heard enough about the proverbial cloud yet.
Understood. The hypefest has been enormous. And the payoff? Not there yet.
For all the verbiage, much remains uncertain. For one thing, whose cloud will survive and prosper? Companies at every level of the supply chain are pitching their own clouds. Microsoft wants you to resell or recommend clients to its Azure-inflected cloud. IBM wants you a: to build your cloud on its software and toolsets or b: host your services directly on its Big Blue cloud. Google says it’s ahead of the game and can provide nearly every service your customers need. SaaS powers Salesforce.com and NetSuite are trying to parlay their hosted applications into more of an overall development and hosting environment for a variety of services.
Distributors say you’d be nuts to go with a one vendor solution. That VARs should think about using distributors as cloud services provider because distributors know about the various vendors and can work with all of them.
So here’s betting that 2009 will be the year when we’ll see whether the cloudfest turns real or is a rehash of the Application Service Provider (ASP) boom and bust of the last decade.
