Brein Matturro Profile: Brein Matturro

A VMware executive has clarified that the company intends to embed only the ESX Server 3i thin hypervisor into server hardware from Dell, Fujitsu, HP, IBM and other hardware vendors.

Brian Byun, VMware’s vice president of global partners and solutions, said he wants to make it clear that the suite of VMware Infrastructure 3 products will not be included in other vendor’s hardware.

The new VMware ESX Server 3i is the architectural foundation for the VMware Infrastructure 3 virtualization software suite. VMware customers can install VMware Infrastructure 3 products on top of this foundation, including VirtualCenter, VMotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), High Availability (HA) and VMware Consolidated Backup (VCB).

“The ESX Server 3i hypervisor — think of it as a single server virtualization that is what the capability is and then customers will have the option to add more management and functionality on top of that,” Byun said.

Byun was responding to comments made by Keith Norbie, director of storage at Plymouth, Minn – based Nexus Information Systems.

In a blog item that appeared last week, Norbie wanted clarification on exactly what would be embedded into other vendor’s hardware Now that he knows, Norbie said he is relieved and thinks partners can make good money adding features to their customers systems.

“If the hypervisor comes preloaded on the box then that is an easy process to help us go in and add value with our expertise and offerings,” Norbie said.
