More Novell cuts, follow Microsoft cuts

If the recession is, in fact,  winding down, employment truly is a trailing indicator, with tech companies continuing to cut headcount.

Last week, both Novell and Microsoft cut jobs. Novell sliced 3% — or about 100 to 130 —  of its 3,900 employees, according to published reports. And it suspended company-paid 401K contributions, according to its 8K filing. Continued »

Sun to cut 3K jobs

Guess Larry Ellison wasn’t kidding  about Sun Microsystems bleeding red ink while European regulators weigh Oracle’s buyout plan.

In an SEC filing, Sun said it will cut 3,000 jobs worldwide over the next year. That’s about 10% of its urrent headcount. More on the Sun layoffs here.

Last Sunday,  Oracle CEO Larry Ellison told thousands of Sun and Oracle customers at Oracle OpenWorld  that Sun was losing $100 million a month while the European Commission considered Oracle’s $7.4 billion buyout of the hardware and Java maker.

Microsoft layoffs: More shoes dropping

TechFlash’s Todd Bishop has the Steve Ballmer memo to the troops outlining  the latest round of Microsoft layoffs. The cuts have been widely expected given a: the economy in general and b: Microsoft’s position relative to Google in the supposedly all-important Web advertising and search market. That position remains woefully weak despite billions in investment.

 Money quote:

 ” With this announcement, we are mostly but not all done with the planned 5,000 job eliminations by June 2010.”
