Storage virtualization is hot. Ingram snags DataCore, too

Server virtualization is soooo last year.

Storage virtualization player DataCore Software, which tapped Tech Data as a distributor just last week, has now inked a deal with Ingram Micro. Is it me, or has storage virtualization become the first interesting tech trend of 2009? DataCore’s big promise is that it will help provide failover SAN capacity in virtualized environments. Its products are SANmelody, which includes provisions for management (big, big deal), disaster recovery and thin provisioning, and SANsymphony, an enterprise-class offering that adds continuous data protection to the mix.

If you haven’t started thinking about storage virtualization yet, these two developments might open your eyes.

This blog posting here at SearchStorage offers some more good background on the concept of virtualization as it applies to storage technology.

Plus, this recap of some storage market shipment numbers suggests that storage hardware will not be immune to the challenges of the broader economy, even though it is declared a growth area. Doing more with what people have already will be the name of the game.
