Barbara Darrow, Charles Phillips, IT channel products and services, Oracle, Sun, Sun hardware, Sun hardware support, Sun VARs
News from the field is that as of Monday, Oracle will no longer accept any purchase orders on Sun (er Oracle) hardware that do not include support.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise given the Sun hardware support changes Oracle imposed in March, but it still felt like a sharp stick in the eye to many Sun VARs. Oh, and some of the VARs have been told to no longer interact directly with Oracle people–even Oracle channel sorts–but to work through Avnet and the MOCA group of Arrow ECS.
They’re not getting a good feeling about this. But then again, they haven’t gotten a good feeling about Sun hardware in many months.
Amusing moment on yesterday’s Oracle earnings call when one analyst asked about the impact of Oracle’s “elimination” of the Sun channel on the Sun hardware business. Charles Phillips was quick to deny any such elimination.
Here’s the thing: Most of the Sun VARs still out there are smart business people. They see the writing on the wall, they know they’re going the way of the dodo, so they’re yessing Oracle to death and recommending as much IBM, HP, even–gasp–Dell hardware as they can.
