Adobe’s Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT) posted an update Tuesday afternoon acknowledging the issue that affects Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.1, 8.1.4, and 7.1.1 and earlier versions. Security experts are urging users to switch to another viewer. Adobe’s suggestion posted on the <a href="http://blogs.adobe.com/psirt"><span style="color: #800080">PSIRT</span></a> site is to disable JavaScript in Adobe Reader and Acrobat with the following instructions: </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt">1. Launch Acrobat or Adobe Reader.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt">2. Select Edit&gt;Preferences </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt">3. Select the JavaScript Category</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt">4. Uncheck the ‘Enable Acrobat JavaScript’ option</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt"> </span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-family: Helvetica;font-size: 10pt">They don’t say when a fix will be available, just that updates will be provided. This is more than inconvenient as system admin will have to scramble to deal with this issue and users will be hesitant to use this important tool.</span></p>
