Cyber Privacy Czar
Posted by: Jay Dugan
The Obama administration is reviving the idea of creating the position of cyber privacy czar. The idea came from a Commerce Department report with Cameron Kerry, Sen. John Kerry’s brother being considered for the role. Regulating the Internet is something the Obama administration has discussed in the past; however, the idea has been met with resistance from those that wish to keep the Internet as it is, free from government regulation. Recent privacy issues arising with Google and Facebook have rekindled the debate. With a lame duck congress about to go into session, it may be the most opportune time for Obama to push this new position through. Some think that this is a dangerous precedent that would lead to regulation of the Internet. Others fear this is like the fox watching the hen house; it could increase the chances of government spying on citizens.
