Facebook, Google, Lotus, Mark Suckberber, Orkut, Sametime, Web 2.0
Frankly I use Facebook, but I hate Facebook. If you know me you are now confused by that statement in that I use it a lot….
It’s not something I want to exaggerate on right now.
The truth of the matter is Mark Zuckberber is not claiming that Facebook Messaging will replace email as we know it. So I kind of agree with Mark in that I have seen the future of Lotus and the Web2.0 ideas they have, but companies are not going to move to Facebook as the messaging system. I do think this is where Facebook missed a huge boat to sell it’s platform and move into companies, and where Lotus needs to drive every developer full speed ahead.
I say this knowing full well this is what Lotus is pitching with Vulcan, but is still 2 – 3 year out according to the road map. To that I say Lotus will be late to the party again. Facebook and Google are both in a position to kill Microsoft (good) and could in fact kill Lotus with an Enterprise level Facebook or Orkut (of the two I would rather see Google Win that one, they seem less evil.), but I digress.
Lotus if you are reading this. Now is the time to merge Lotus Web Mail, Connections, Sametime IM, Sametime Web Sharing, Quickr, and Symphony into one platform and get it out the door along with a Facebook type look an feel (as Connections is a bit clunky) to beat the Facebook.com to the punch. The one this Mark does not understand is accountability in email and authenticity of mail. Security has not been Facebook’s strong point. Too many ways to hack and account and start sending messages.
