This weekend — July 23rd and 24th, 2011 — from 9am to 6pm, at WeCreate, located at 58 East 11th Street, NYC, there will be a …”two-day hackathon where UNICEF folks, ad agency kids and your fellow hackers will try to make a difference.” If you’re within a reasonable distance of NYC and you’re free this weekend, head on over. If not, there are hacker-type events all over the place where you can make valuable job contacts.

Taking Your Skills Overseas — or Up the Street

Robin Robin "Roblimo" Miller Profile: Robin "Roblimo" Miller

What brought this up was a job feeler I just got from someone I first met during a trip to New Delhi. There, and in other major Indian cities, especially Bangalore, IT talent and phone support people who speak “American English” competently are getting hard to find. So his proposal was that I come to India for at least several months out of every year and teach classes in written and spoken colloquial American English. Which led to the question of whether programmers and other IT professionals might be able to find similar opportunities.

How Much Independence Should You Have at Work?

Robin Robin "Roblimo" Miller Profile: Robin "Roblimo" Miller

Or do we want more security? And how does the famous Benjamin Franklin quote, “They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety,” fit into our thinking about job security vs. employment independence?

Robin Robin "Roblimo" Miller Profile: Robin "Roblimo" Miller

My question was, “What are good alternate career paths for an IT person who wants to move into another field?” I got a number of answers from my ad hoc panel of experts. One of the most intriguing was from Rob Holmes, a private investigator who says, “Much of the work we do these days is online.” And, therefore, he believes an IT to PI career move is both logical and likely to succeed.
